چکیده

Folates are vital for cell division and homoeostasis because of the essential role of folate-containing co-enzymes in nucleic acid synthesis, methionine regeneration, and the shuttling, oxidation and reduction of one-carbon units required for normal metabolism and regulation. Furthermore, folates play an important role in reducing the incidence of neural tube defects. Prior to the fortification of foods, numerous worldwide studies reported high folate deficiencies in women of childbearing age. In Limpopo Province, the prevalence of folate deficiency was reported to be 21% in non-pregnant women of childbearing age, and 48% in pregnant women. Dietary surveys undertaken in the Capricorn district of Limpopo Province have shown that folate intake is below the recommended daily allowance (RDA).
